The Roseburg Sheriff’s Office released a corrected count Friday, saying that 10 were killed and nine were wounded in the shooting that took place at Umpqua College Thursday.

The OregonLive has confirmed the shooter is Chris Harper-Mercer, a 26-year-old resident of Winchester near the college. Harper-Mercer was a student in class. Those he killed are Lucero Alcaraz, 19; Treven Taylor Anspach, 20; Rebecka Ann Carnes, 18; Quinn Glen Cooper, 18; Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, 59; Lucas Eibel, 18; Jason Dale Johnson, 34; Lawrence Levine, 67; and Sarena Dawn Moore, 44.

Reporters spoke to the gunman’s father Ian Mercer outside of his home in California.

“I know words cannot bring families back. I know there’s nothing that I can say that can change what happened,” Ian Mercer said outside his home in California. “But please believe me, my thoughts are with all of those families and I hope they can get through this,” Ian Mercer said.

It seems like school shootings have been on a never ending rise since the Columbine shooting that occurred in April of 1999. Many of these crazed shooters end up having some deeper lying cause as to why they committed such acts, but how can we prevent these shootings from happening? Many cases show that the shooters had previous mental health issues that caused them to do it. In the case of the Roseburg shooting, Ian Mercer would not comment on his sons mental health? Hmm…?  He also claims that he had no idea of his son owning guns.

“I had no idea he had any guns. I have no idea that he had any guns whatsoever,” Mercer said. “And I’m a great believer you don’t buy guns, don’t buy guns, you don’t buy guns,” Ian Mercer said.

Mercer wouldn’t comment on whether his son had emotional or mental issues. “That is for investigators to determine,” he said.

There seems to be a lot of missing information right now on the gunman himself, but this epidemic of school shootings needs to be stopped. Innocent lives are being taken for seemingly no reason. These middle aged adults are committing terrible acts and it is hard to determine why because these shootings often end in the gunman committing suicide. This is so devastating for everyone involved. It is just odd to me that there is a pattern among these school shooters. They are typically young men that have had mental health issues. Somehow there must be a way to prevent people suffering from an illness from committing such acts. The shootings keep happening, and seemingly nothing is being done about them.
